Rainbow Riches is a slot game that I have played in casinos in Vegas and AC. It has been created by slot manufacturer Barcrest and is very popular on the other side of the pond. The game features a comical leprechaun who appears in all of the bonus rounds.

This slot is from Barcrest, which IGT acquired back in 1998. The theme has been done before, with rainbows, leprechaun’s and (of course) pots of gold making a great theme for slot games. What is different about this one is that you’ll get 3 different bonus games – as well as stacked symbols. Like all recent Barcrest slots, when you first load the game online it asks you what country you are from. I played this game in British pounds.

There are 20 lines, and smart enough graphics for this game. Visually it is not exceptional, though certainly a cut above some of the earlier Barcrest games I have played. The sounds only happen while you are spinning the reels. A bright noise, which did get a little repetitive as my session went on. The sound I think they should get rid of is the thuds as the game cycles through the win lines after your spin.

One of the bonus games (Wishing well) is in-reel, with the two others being pick-em rounds which go to break out screens. These were not too frequent, though the wins were reasonably big when they did come around. The ‘Rainbow Riches’ logo is stacked, which means you can get entire reels covered in this symbol – adding another way to get a big win.

There is a maximum of 20 lines on this slot. I recommend you play them all to take full advantage of the stacked symbols. You can play from 1p per line, making 20p the minimum and £50 per line or £1000 per spin the maximum. Auto-play is available for up to 25 spins at a time.

Gold coins are the top symbol, and the wild is also something you want to hit. This is worth 500x your line bet if you hit 5 of a kind. The usual exclusion about not substituting for the bonus symbols applies. I found the wild was frequent in this game, helping to make a lot of smaller wins.

Next in the pay table is the stacked Rainbow Riches logo. You’ll get 250 coin denominations for 5 of a kind. In theory you could cover the entire reels in this symbol at once, which would net you 20x 250 – a win of 5000 coins. The playing card symbols ace down to 10 are the remaining winning symbols, these pay out for 3 of a kind or more.

The remaining symbols are the leprechaun, which starts the ‘Road to Riches’ bonus; the well, which starts the ‘Wishing Well’ bonus; and the pot of gold, which starts the ‘Pots of Gold’ bonus.

The Wishing Well bonus is the simplest of the 3 bonus rounds. If you get 3 wells on the reels, you get to pick one of them by clicking. This awards a win of your total stake multiplied by the amount shown. This is an instant win and you go back to the game right away.

The Road to Riches has a spinning wheel, which lets you move up a road covered in cash prizes. You spin to see how many steps you take down the road, and keep whatever prize you land on before spinning again. The game will end when you land on a ‘collect prize’ spot. The further you get, the bigger the prizes get, with 500 times your stake being the biggest pay out.

Pots of Gold is another wheel-like game. You’ll see the leprechaun in the middle of the screen with pots of gold circling him. When the spinning stops the pot at the bottom is multiplied by your stake to give you a prize. Again you can win up to 500 times your stake in this game.

I like this game; it has enough going on to keep you interested – and the classic Barcrest game-play which is always solid. It did seem to take a while to trigger the bonuses, though they paid reasonable prizes when they did finally arrive. Having 3 different games kept the interest level up too. A little more work on the sounds and a quicker reset between the spins would make this a recommendation. As it stands, this is a solid slot and one which is still worth checking out when you have some spare time.

Somewhere over the rainbow… is, apparently a world of Irish stereotypes! Or something like that. Rainbow Riches slot is yet another in a long line of Leprechaun-themed games based around the supposed little people of the island of Ireland. I’m not Irish so I have no idea how the average modern Irish person views this sort of stuff, but the idea of the “lucky Irish” has been floating around the slots world forever. Here, the well-worn theme hides a pretty straight-forward classic slot from the Barcrest stable with three bonus games to lively up a traditional base game.

You can play this game on all platforms using Flash, Javascript and HTML5.

Rainbow Riches Slot Design

The look and feel of Rainbow Riches slot game are pretty old-fashioned. We’ve mentioned the Irish theming, and it’s well reflected in the design of the whole machine.

A big rainbow floats in the background with a Celtic weave making the boundary between that and the five reels, which are squared off and white. There’s a Celtic feel to the design of the symbols too, down to the cartoon leprechaun in his green suit.

The buttons run along the bottom of the screen, under a single information window.

The Developer of Rainbow Riches Slot

This game has been around since May 2009, so it’s quite a veteran. You will almost certainly have played games by its developer, Barcrest, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2018. They are a fully licensed and trusted company who has produced some of the most famous games in the history of slots.

Scientific Gaming is the brand under which Rainbow Riches appear, and a lot of Barcrest online games are badged this way. As well as slots, Barcrest produces online casino games. They specialise in high-roller slots, branded in the UK as £500 slots.

Among their titles are the rest of the Rainbow Riches family of game, Himalayas Roof of the World, Soldier of Rome, and The Legend of Big Foot.

Rainbow Riches Slot: the Basics

You’ll feel very at home with this game, which uses a lot of themes and features that are well-worn favourites in the online slots world.

That starts with a super-trad layout: five-by-three with 20 pay-lines. That set-up delivers a theoretical return to player of 95%, so a little below the best on offer at the moment, on betting from 0.1 to 400 coins and a maximum payout of 250,000 coins. (Always check the betting and pay-out details at the site where you are playing a game.)

The paytable opens with a single click from the main screen and reads like this. The traditional card symbols are the lower-paying symbols.

The 10, Jack, and Queen all pay 5-times stake for three, 10-times for four, and 100-times for a full house. Kings pay 10-times, 50-times, and 150-times, as do Aces.

Rainbow Riches Slot Bonus Games

There are also four special symbols that relate to bonus games.

Pots of gold, which can only appear on reels two, three, or four. Wishing Wells, Roads to Riches, and Wilds also appear. Wilds substitute for everything except the other special symbols.

Wilds also pay out their own rewards: two pay two-times stake, three pay 60-times, four pays 200-times, and five pays 500-times stake.

The Rainbow Riches slot game logo also pays out: two pay double your stake, three pay 50-times, four is worth 150-times, and five pays 250-times your stake.

Those bonus symbols are Scatters. Three of one of those will trigger the bonus features of the same name.

The Road to Riches bonus is a cash path feature with set prizes along a road that reaches a final destination of 500-times your stake or finishes via a “collect” on the lucky wheel.

Wishing Wells is a picking feature with three wishing wells hiding prize multipliers that can get as high as 500-times your stake.

The Pots of Gold feature triggers via that scatter on reels two, three, or four. This is a random gift feature, again with a top prize of 500-times your stake.

How to Play Rainbow Riches Online Slot

This game is easy to play as any game on the market.

At the bottom of the screen, you’ll find the controls. A three-bar menu button at the far left of the screen. This opens up the pay-table of three pages. To the right is an auto-play button that opens up a sub-window with quite a sophisticated function that allows you to set a stop after losing or winning a certain amount or hitting a jackpot.

In the centre of the control panel are the betting controls. First is the pay-line selector that allows you to select up to 20 bet-ways, which show up on the reels as you select them. Then is the bet—per-line button, which goes up an uneven scale to a maximum of 25 coins per line (check maximum permitted bets on the site where you are playing), which produces a total bet that shows up in the next window. Then is the window where your wins show up, and finally on the right is a green spin button.

As you can see it’s all very simple and easy to find your way around.

One issue is that the balance is shown in very small print at the top of the screen next to a mute button and more helpful advice. Now, why would a gambling company want you not to see your balance clearly? We wonder.

Rainbow Riches Slot: the Verdict

On its face, the Rainbow Riches slot machine is a very simple game. Despite that simplicity, it has become one of the most popular games in the slot world, appearing at thousands of casino sites around the world. In fact, perhaps that simplicity helps sell this game.

Underneath the simple façade lies a decent amount of variability in the gameplay, with great bonus games that offer the promise of some real gold at the end of your Irish rainbow.
